How to Paint Colorful Flip Flops in Watercolor - A Fun Beginner Tutorial

June 07, 20267 min read

I have a confession to make. I own more pairs of flip flops than I probably should admit to. Bright ones, striped ones, ones with little flowers on the straps. And every single year the moment I slip on that first pair of the season, something in me just exhales. This flip flops watercolor tutorial is painted in exactly that spirit - because some things deserve to be painted simply because they make you happy.

A Little Thing Called Easy

There is a specific kind of joy that only arrives when something is uncomplicated.

Not every good thing has to be hard. Some of the best moments of a summer are the ones that ask almost nothing of you - bare feet on warm grass, a cold glass of something sweet, the particular happiness of doing exactly what you feel like doing at exactly the right moment.

Flip flops are a small symbol of all of that. They say: today is not a day for difficulty. Today is a day for color and ease and letting the air reach your ankles.

No laces. No socks. No boots to wrestle on. Just - flip. Flop. Done. And if you walk through the wet grass or end up at the beach? Fine. Rinse them off and keep going.

Why Paint Flip Flops?

Because they make you happy. And that is a complete and sufficient reason.

This flip flops watercolor tutorial is one of the most colorful and joyful projects we've done all summer. Rainbow stripes, purple straps, little flowers and hearts scattered around - it's impossible to paint this and not smile.

And here's the best part: those rainbow stripes are actually painted with just five colors. Add a little simple mixing with exact instructions. Just five cheerful colors doing exactly what they're meant to do - making something bright and beautiful and completely yours.

We forget sometimes that ease is allowed. That simple is beautiful. That choosing something because it makes you happy is reason enough.

Your Flip Flops Watercolor Color Palette

Five colors is all you need for this flip flops watercolor tutorial:

Sunrise Coral - a warm coral red for the hearts, flowers and one of the stripes. Bold and summery and completely happy.

Lemon Squeeze - a bright sunny yellow for the sun, some flowers and two of the stripes. Your cheeriest color this week.

Lawn Chair Green - two shades of green for the leaves, stems and the grassy hill the flip flops sit on. Mix with a little water for the lighter shade.

Pool Day Blue - a soft sky blue for the teal stripe. Cool and refreshing against all that warm coral and yellow.

Violet Hour - a rich purple for the straps, one stripe, and the purple hearts and flowers. This is your most dramatic color and the one that ties everything together.

Mixing tip: For the purple strap, mix Violet Hour with just a tiny touch of Pool Day Blue while it's still wet - it gives the strap a little life and keeps it from looking flat. Watercolor loves a little company.

Bonus tip: Sunrise Coral diluted way down with water gives you a soft pink for the tulip flower - so you're actually getting six colors from five. That's the watercolor magic right there.

How to Paint Colorful Flip Flops - 6 Easy Steps

The full video tutorial is on my video channel at Mind Your Heart Studio. Here's the simple breakdown:

Step 1: Lightly sketch or trace the outline of the flip flops, flowers and sun. Tracing is completely fine - it removes drawing anxiety and gets you straight to the painting.

Step 2: Paint the sun, some flowers and two stripes yellow and orange with Lemon Squeeze and Sunrise Coral. Keep everything light and summery.

Step 3: Paint the hearts, flowers and coral-red stripe with Sunrise Coral. This is where the painting starts to come alive.

Step 4: Paint the leaves, stems, grassy hill and green stripes with two shades of Lawn Chair Green. Mix with water for the lighter shade.

Step 5: Paint the straps, purple stripe, hearts and flowers with Violet Hour. This is the most satisfying step - watch everything pull together.

Step 6: Outline and add details with a permanent black fine tip pen. This is the step that makes everything look intentional, finished and completely joyful.

Your Painting Practice Can Be Like Flip Flops

Light, easy and ready for wherever the day takes you.

I think we sometimes make creativity harder than it needs to be. We wait until we have the right supplies, the right space, the right amount of time, the right level of confidence. We treat it like something we need to earn rather than something we're simply allowed to do.

But what if your painting practice felt like slipping on your favorite flip flops? No fuss. No overthinking. Just pick up the brush and go.

That's what I want for you every single Friday. Not a masterpiece. Not a perfect technique or a flawless result. Just the experience of making something - of choosing a color because you love it, of following your own hand across the page, of finishing something small and feeling quietly proud that you did.

Because here's what I know after all these years of painting: the joy doesn't live in the finished piece. It lives in the hour you spent making it.

This Tutorial Is for You - Wherever You Are Today

Whether you're an experienced painter or picking up a brush for the very first time, this flip flops watercolor tutorial is designed to meet you exactly where you are. No pressure. No comparison. Just a colorful joyful scene, a summer palette, and a quiet hour that belongs entirely to you.

FAQs About This Flip Flops Watercolor Tutorial

Do I need any art experience for this flip flops watercolor tutorial? Not at all. This tutorial is designed for complete beginners. A tracing guide is available so you never have to worry about drawing the flip flops from scratch.

How do I get so many colors from just five paints? Watercolor is magic that way! Diluting a color with water lightens it significantly - Sunrise Coral diluted way down becomes soft pink. And mixing two colors together gives you new ones. The full tutorial on YouTube walks you through every color decision step by step.

How long will it take? Most beginners complete this painting in about forty-five minutes. It's a perfect quiet summer afternoon project.

What if my stripes aren't perfectly even? They don't need to be. Slightly uneven stripes with soft watercolor edges are part of what makes this painting charming and handmade. Perfectly even stripes are for machines - this is for you.
