If you've been painting along all summer, you already have everything you need. Five colors, six paintings, all summer long. I used Daniel Smith professional watercolor paints, but any paint in similar colors will do just fine. Or, you can create your own palette - it doesn't have to look just like mine!
The Mixing Secret for This Painting
This week's mixing tip has three beautiful moments all from the same starting point:
Start with Sunshine Yellow and add a touch of Sunset Coral to create a warm sandy color for the ground. Then take that same mix and dilute it with lots of water for the soft cream trim around the doors and windows - one mix, two uses. Finally, take that sandy mix and add a touch of Harbor Heart to deepen it into a natural warm brown for the stepping stones leading up to the door.
Remember - always start with the lighter color and add the darker one gradually. You can always add more but it's much harder to go back.
Just Enough
My parents didn't need a grand vacation home. A modest rustic cottage by a Michigan lake, offered by a generous friend who wanted almost nothing for it - that was just enough. And it gave them more joy than something expensive ever could have.
I think about that when I sit down to paint. You don't need a studio. You don't need expensive supplies or years of training or a natural gift you were born with. You just need a kitchen table, five colors, and a little time that belongs entirely to you.
