How to Paint a Sweet Little Kitten in Watercolor - A Beginner Friendly Tutorial

May 08, 20266 min read

I was twenty years old and not quite sure what I was doing with my life when I got my first cat. She was a grey and white striped tabby and I named her Mel - short for Melonie. My roommates at Michigan State were all in veterinary school and they had a simple prescription for what ailed me: get a kitten. So I did. And this beginner friendly watercolor kitten tutorial is, in a small way, painted in her honor.

The Pet Who Got Me Through

Mel was my first baby. She traveled all the way to California with me after graduation - my little co-pilot through every uncertain mile. She was loyal and steady and always there. When she died I cried for days. My husband made her a quiet burial site on the side of a hill on our property. It was a real goodbye.

I've been a dog person ever since - Ollie, my maltipoo, can confirm. 🐾

But when I sat down to paint this little orange tabby this week, Mel came right back to me. Funny how that happens. A tiny painted kitten on a piece of watercolor paper and suddenly I'm twenty years old again, not quite sure what I'm doing, just glad something warm is curled up nearby.

What You'll Paint This Week

This week's watercolor kitten tutorial features the most adorable little orange tabby - warm golden fur, deeper tabby stripes, and the sweetest sage green eyes you've ever painted. It's beginner friendly, no drawing required, and one of the most satisfying projects we've done all spring.

If you've ever wanted to paint an animal but felt intimidated, this is your starting place. Simple shapes, soft washes, and a fine tip pen to pull it all together at the end.

Your Color Palette - Sweet Little Kitten

Five colors is all you need for this watercolor kitten tutorial:

Orange Marmalade - the warm golden-orange base coat that covers most of the kitten's body. This is your hardest working color this week.

Tabby Stripe - a deeper orange-brown for the stripes. The key is letting your base layer dry completely before adding these so they stay crisp and defined.

Sage Eye - a soft sage green for those beautiful eyes. This is the detail that brings the whole painting to life.

Blush Ear - a soft pink for the inner ears, cheeks and the little nose. A tiny amount goes a long way.

Whisker White - a pale creamy white for the chest and muzzle. This is what gives the kitten that soft, sweet, dimensional look.

How to Paint the Kitten - 6 Easy Steps

The full video tutorial is on my YouTube channel at Mind Your Heart Studio, but here's the simple breakdown:

Step 1: Lightly sketch or trace the kitten outline. Tracing is completely fine — it removes drawing anxiety and gets you straight to the painting.

Step 2: Paint the warm golden-orange base coat over the whole body. Keep it light and watery — this is just the foundation.

Step 3: Once dry, add the deeper tabby stripes. Work quickly and confidently — don't overwork them.

Step 4: Paint the sage green eyes, blush pink ears, and little pink nose. These small details make an enormous difference.

Step 5: Add the creamy white to the chest and muzzle. Let it blend softly at the edges.

Step 6: Outline and add details with a permanent black fine tip pen. This is the step that makes everything look intentional and finished.

The Ones Who Stay

I've been thinking all week about the pets who carry us through. Not the ones we planned for necessarily - the ones that showed up at exactly the right moment. When we were young and uncertain. When we were in the middle of something hard. When we just needed something warm nearby that asked nothing of us in return.

Many women I know have a version of Mel in their past. A pet who got her through something. A first companion before the real responsibilities arrived.

And I think that's part of what painting does for us too. You sit down not quite sure what you're doing. A little uncertain. A little lost. And then the brush moves and the color spreads and something in you quietly settles.

You don't have to have it all figured out to begin. You just have to show up.

This Tutorial Is for You - Wherever You Are Today

Whether you're an experienced painter or picking up a brush for the very first time, this watercolor kitten tutorial is designed to meet you exactly where you are. No pressure. No comparison. Just a sweet little kitten, a warm palette, and a quiet hour that belongs entirely to you.

If this little orange tabby brings back a memory - a pet you loved, a season you survived, a version of yourself that was figuring it all out - I hope you'll share it in the comments. I'd love to hear about the ones who stayed.
